Tree planting day to unite LGBTIQ+ communities

Melbourne Water is looking for volunteers for its first tree planting day for LGBTIQ+ communities at Brooklyn on Sunday 19 June.

Members of the community, their friends and allies, who are passionate about the environment or would like to connect with others and do something meaningful, are encouraged to pop on their gardening gloves and join in.

Melbourne Water’s Waterwatch Coordinator, Customer & Strategy, Dr Teresa Jane Mackintosh said the event will be welcoming, relaxed and fun.

“Melbourne Water is proud to be an authentically inclusive organisation internally and externally,” Dr Mackintosh said.

“Whichever part of the LGBTIQ+ community you identify with, the tree planting day is a fantastic opportunity to come along, enjoy the outdoors, meet other people, and help the environment.”

Volunteers do not need to have prior experience or be a green thumb. On the day, the holes will have been dug already. The plants and tools will be provided, and people will simply pop the plants in the holes, water them and put rabbit-proof guards around them.

Melbourne Water is committed to diversity and inclusion and its mission is to enhance life and liveability through its work. The planting day is a collaboration with Waterwatch. By taking part, volunteers will be improving the health of the environment at the site for the benefit of the local community.

Registrations are needed to ensure a COVIDSafe event.
