Kathy Preece and Sara Johnson have been in a job-share arrangement at Melbourne Water for over a year. Here, they reflect on their collaborative work story.
“On a day-to-day basis, our success comes from compatible organisational and communication styles. We’re particularly clear about who is responsible for each task, including the many things that we collaborate on. We call our job-share model a ‘tango’ because we aim to perform the role in a seamless routine,” Kathy said.

Mothers matter in the workplace
Returning to work after parental leave can be a daunting experience. Employees can experience a number of challenges, including stereotypes such as they’ll be less committed and not able to focus on work when requesting flexible work arrangements.
For Melbourne Water’s Joanne Thom – a Waterway Manager – her return to work late last year after the birth of her third child was the opposite experience – a positive one! She says she has been well supported to return to the career she loves. For Joanne, communication was key.
